OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared the prospects for ChatGPT and the company’s broader AI plans in a Reddit AMA. For anyone hoping to see ChatGPT-5 in 2025, Altman’s message was clear: it won’t happen. He was quick to deny the rumors, calling reports of an imminent release “fake news.”

But don’t worry, OpenAI isn’t slowing down. Altman said they are working on exciting updates that should be released later this year. So while there’s no name “GPT-5” yet, there’s definitely something to look forward to.

Big movements and new opportunities
2024 has already been a busy year for OpenAI. They introduced an enhanced voice mode for ChatGPT in desktop apps and introduced a new search feature that gives Google a run for its money. Altman seems very excited about how ChatGPT search differs from traditional search engines, noting that it is a faster, more user-friendly way to find information, especially for complex queries.

He even hinted at a future in which search results could automatically create their own web pages on the fly. Sounds pretty transformative, doesn’t it?

When asked about the next steps for Dall-E 3, the image generator included with ChatGPT, Altman was a bit vague. He promised that whatever comes next will be worth the wait, but did not give a specific time frame. So, it looks like visual updates are on the back burner for now.

What’s next? Autonomous AI
One of the hot topics that emerged was autonomous AI—programs that can do more than just respond to commands, but can actually perform tasks on their own. Altman hinted that this will be the case in 2025, making it clear that OpenAI is moving in that direction.

He suggested that “agents”—artificially intelligent bots that can act independently—are the next big step forward. It’s a trend we’re seeing everywhere, with competitors like Google diving into similar projects like Jarvis AI.

The quest for real intelligence
Perhaps the most stunning moment was Altman’s talk about AGI, or artificial general intelligence. Think of it as the Holy Grail of AI – a system that could think and reason like a human, and maybe even better. Altman has previously mentioned that AGI could be a “several thousand days” away, and in this AMA he doubled down, saying he believes it’s achievable with the technology we have today. This is pretty wild, considering that AGI often seems like something far from science fiction.

So, while ChatGPT-5 won’t go live next year, OpenAI has big plans. From more interactive AI features to the push towards AGI, the company is definitely gearing up for some major changes. The next chapter of AI is going to be exciting—and OpenAI looks poised to lead the charge.
