Parking fees to rise in three Norfolk towns

Parking fees to rise in three Norfolk towns

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the proposals were first considered earlier this year but were shelved due to concerns over Sunday parking charges. This measure has now been canceled.

“It’s a simple cost recovery plan,” Mr. Elmer said. “This is not Norwich and we are not going to try our best to make a profit.”

The council owns eight car parks in Diss, two in Harleston, two in Loddon, one in Long Stratton and four in Wymondham.

The Harleston and Long Stratton sites are managed separately and will remain free of charge.

The charges have been frozen since 2016.

Under the new fares, drivers will be charged £2 for driving up to three hours, instead of £1 for two hours.

The cost of full day parking will also increase from £4 to £5.

But all cities will still offer free first hour of parking.

Conservative councilor Lisa Overton-Neill said: “We’re not doing this to make a profit for the council, but we do need to have enough money to maintain our car parks without all our taxpayers having to foot the bill.

“So the costs are passed on to the users and I believe they are still affordable.”

The updated tariffs are expected to be introduced by autumn next year.
