Brooklyn mail theft: Crime caught on surveillance video sends Crown Heights community into a frenzy

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) — Residents in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, are feeling uneasy after video shows a man stealing mail from a street corner mailbox.

Police say a man got out of a white Alfa Romero near Kingston Avenue and Carroll Street on Monday and broke into a mailbox.

The man then loaded two bags of mail into the back seat of his car and got into the passenger seat before the car drove off.

“You know, it’s such a terrible crime because you’re stealing someone else’s mail,” said resident Andrea Karshan. “And mail is very personal. As I said, people are lost, and their loved ones and people are receiving very, very important things. at the post office.”

Surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News shows a white sedan approaching the mailbox about 30 seconds after the U.S. Postal Service truck pulled away.

Some area residents are wondering if the postal worker was being followed by scammers.

“Shock and surprise,” Tehila added. “In 2020, almost 2025, things like this shouldn’t be happening now.”

The crime also comes just two months after a 56-year-old postal worker was robbed at gunpoint by two men about a mile away in Monday’s incident.
Police say the men who robbed a postal worker made off with her keys. They also noted that it is unclear whether the incidents are related.

“It makes me feel very unsafe,” said Anna Shaw of Crown Heights.

The NYPD says USPS has been notified of the crime and is investigating the matter.

The USPS statement said in part: “The United States Postal Inspection Service is aware of the video in question but cannot confirm, deny or otherwise comment on the existence of an ongoing investigation.”
