Paradise to Unveil Mural to Honor Children on Camp Fire Anniversary

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the devastating Camp Fire, the Rebuild Paradise Foundation, Paradise Unified School District, Paradise Charter Schools and the local community are set to unveil a sunset-themed tile mural at Paradise Community Park on Saturday, November 9th.

The mural will feature the handprints, ages and initials of more than 2,500 children living in Paradise, created during the anniversary of the Camp Fire.

“We are thrilled and grateful for all the support and dedication to the handprint mural unveiling committee,” said Jen Goodlin, executive director of Rebuild Paradise. “We believe it is very important to honor the children and families who have returned to Paradise. This is such a great family community and this mural means we are coming back.”

The Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. It began on November 8, 2018 and quickly spread through the communities of Concow, Magalia, Butte Creek Canyon and Paradise. The fire burned 153,336 acres, killed 85 people, displaced more than 50,000 people and destroyed more than 18,000 structures, causing damage estimated at $16.5 billion.

“We all know relatives or heroes dedicated to a cause like the mural project,” said Tom Taylor, Paradise USD superintendent. “But this project is meant to celebrate the children who came back to Ridge after such a terrible tragedy. This means so much to our community. We are so proud of the children, families, Rebuild Paradise, the Paradise Chamber of Commerce and the community to celebrate this monumental project.”
