Cracks spotted on boundary wall of Puri Jagannath Temple, ASI called for survey

Indian authorities have contacted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s Puri to conduct a scientific study on the boundary wall of the 12th century shrine as cracks were noticed on it, it was reported PTI.

The custodian of the temple is the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

According to the report, Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padi wrote to ASI that cracks were found in the giant wall around the temple complex.

In the letter, Padhi also asked the ASI to immediately repair and restore the ‘Meganad Pacheri’ – the border wall. He added that SJTA’s civil engineering department has taken steps to prevent water from leaking onto the wall.

Apart from this, Padhi also mentioned that SJTA has initiated a tender to improve the drainage system of Anand Bazaar, the place inside the temple where people take prasad.

The temple administration also assured the ASI of all support for the renovation work.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said the matter is urgent and repair work will begin immediately to prevent further damage to the wall.

“Due to some mistakes in the past, such problems arose,” PTI quoted Padha as pointing out the construction work around the temple complex carried out by the previous BJD government.

No secret room found in Jagannath Temple

In another Indian Express report, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said that there is no secret room in the Indian Treasury. Jagannath Temple in Puri.

The announcement came after a survey of the temple’s Ratna Bhandara (treasury) by senior scientists of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in mid-September, the report said. adding that the committee may soon submit its final report to the temple administration.
