Andy Halliday on why he repeated his refusal to celebrate Rangers, but the part he regrets

Much has been made about Andy Halliday’s refusal to celebrate after scoring against Rangers at the weekend.

This is something that happens in football all over the world as many players feel they want to show a little respect to their former employers when they score against them.

Holliday gave Motherwell the lead at Hampden on Sunday, using every fiber of his being to finish off Steve Seddon’s cross when Jefte ran in the opposite direction.

Its muted celebration was not a surprise given its long history. Ibrox Association as a fan and then a player, but it still caused a strong reaction.

Halliday reacts to Rangers’ lack of celebration scandal

Social media was filled with fans from various clubs criticizing the midfielder for the way he chose to celebrate or not.

Some even accused him of disrespecting Motherwell.

BBC pundit and former Gers striker Stephen Thompson said he was “displeased” with the decision not to celebrate his goal in the semi-final.

Now Halliday has spoken out and criticized the “embarrassing” reaction.

Speaking to Clyde One Superscoreboard, he said: “Nothing should surprise me in the west of Scotland, especially when it happens throughout world football.

“But I think it surprises me again at the weekend because the last thing I was certainly trying to do was disrespect Motherwell, that’s for sure.

“I’ve heard this comment come under fire in the last couple of days and it confuses me. “I’ll bite my tongue before I start digging people out.”

Halliday would do the same again against Rangers or Hearts

The 32-year-old insists he would do the same again if he scored against Rangers – and even his other former club Hearts.

He admits there is one part of the gesture he may regret.

Halliday added: “I may (regret) the hands up – because those sort of gestures were apologetic, but I certainly wasn’t the first one to apologize for scoring a goal.

“But I’ll say if we played Rangers or Hearts next week and I scored but still won’t celebrate.

“I will never do anything to appease other people, that’s for sure. So I don’t regret it.

“When Louis Moult scored against Motherwell – his old club – for Dundee United, he didn’t celebrate.”
