CHICAGO (WLS) — A man faces felony charges after Illinois State Police said he crashed into a police officer during a traffic stop.

The incident happened just after 10:20 a.m. Monday in the northbound lanes of I-57 near 108th Street in Morgan Park.

The trooper was standing on a grassy embankment when a black Hyundai heading north failed to move, pulled onto the side of the road and crashed into the trooper and two other parked cars, ISP reported.

The driver of the Hyundai was identified as Dario A. Lopez-Arevalo, 22, of Robbins.

Lopez-Arévalo faces felony charges for violating Scott’s Law, as well as for not having a driver’s license, driving an uninsured vehicle and numerous other Illinois Vehicle Code violations, ISP said.

The trooper was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer’s identity has not been established.

The ISP reported that so far in 2024, ten military personnel have been injured in 21 accidents related to the moving law throughout Illinois.
