The Mets’ blockbuster proposal is to trade Edwin Diaz for the two-time All-Star.

The New York Mets fell just short of making it to the World Series in 2024. They could look to make significant additions in hopes of overcoming the odds next season.

Listing landing spots for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Reimer proposed this trade that would send him to the Mets, replacing Edwin Diaz as the closer:

  • Mets receive: right-handed pitcher Devin Williams
  • The Brewers receive: third baseman Brett Baty and infielder Luisangel Acuña.

“Here and now (David Stearns) is looking at a bullpen depth chart that was decimated by free agency,” Reimer wrote. “He also needs to cover Diaz, who has looked his old self only occasionally since returning from knee surgery.”

Diaz struggled with consistency in 2024 after a year-long absence. The Mets kept their season alive by walking Williams in the ninth inning of Game 3 against the Brewers. A connection with Stearns from their time in Milwaukee would make the Mets an ideal player. If they keep Alonso, what they give up won’t even seem that big.

“The Mets will need Batey if they don’t re-sign Pete Alonso, but at the same time, he certainly looks like a trade chip for a change of scenery,” Reimer wrote. “For my part, it is significant that Acuña did not start a single playoff game. Whether he will have a starting role in 2025 is unclear.”

The Brewers declined Devin Williams’ $10.5 million option for 2025. He is still with the team, however, this is the final year of his contract and with a lower salary he is now a trade candidate. Williams is a two-time All-Star and two-time Trevor Hoffman Offensive Player of the Year Award winner. He’s one of the best players in the league, but his failure in the playoffs and impending free agency could be enough for the Brewers to give him a deal.
