The Philadelphia Flyers signed a backup goaltender for the Tampa Bay Lightning game.

The Philadelphia Flyers are facing a logistical challenge ahead of their road game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Flyers goaltender Alexei Kolosov was injured during morning skate and was later ruled out of the game against the Lightning.

With the teams in Tampa Bay, the Flyers likely won’t be able to get another goalie into the arena in time for the puck to serve as a backup. Without a viable option in the immediate area, the Flyers signed a backup goaltender.

The Flyers announced the signing of Kyle Conine to an amateur contract to serve as a backup against the Lightning. Ivan Fedotov will be the Flyers’ starter.

This isn’t the first time Conine has served as Tampa Bay’s backup goaltender. The first came in December 2021 for the St. Louis Blues, and the last time for the Lightning in April 2024. Despite making two appearances at the EBUG position, he never logged a second of NHL playing time.

Conine, 26, played hockey for Grand Valley State University during the 2019-20 season.

The Flyers said Kolosov was only out on a daily basis. Regular starter Sam Ersson was sidelined with a lower-body injury of his own.

Hockey fans love a good backup goaltender, and the Flyers and Lightning suddenly have a game worth keeping a close eye on.
