FBI arrests two people in Utah after 110 mph chase

SALT LAKE CITY — The FBI and the Davis Metro Drug Strike Force announced the arrest of two men Monday following a pursuit near Salt Lake City that reached speeds of up to 110 mph.

On Monday, investigators believed the suspect they had been tracking for weeks, 36-year-old Timothy Barfield, was re-entering Utah, according to court documents obtained by FOX 13 News.

The FBI Wasatch Drug Task Force was able to identify the vehicle being driven by Barfield, and arriving agents identified the vehicle’s passenger as a secondary suspect, 23-year-old Caleb Graham.

Given the suspects’ previous history, officials determined that a high-risk stop was the safest way to conduct the investigation. Utah Highway Patrol units responded to assist with a traffic stop on the Tooele side of the Salt Lake City/Toole County line.

During this stop, the suspects fled the scene toward Salt Lake City. Police noticed that during the chase, a backpack was thrown out of the car, which investigators were later able to recover.

Officers disabled the vehicle by slashing the tires after it reached speeds of 110 mph. The suspects then fled on foot southeast for about a mile before being taken into custody.

The backpack thrown from the vehicle contained 13.8 grams of fentanyl powder, 6,000 fentanyl pills, 440 grams of methamphetamine, 471 grams of cocaine, 107 grams of crack cocaine, as well as marijuana and scales, according to police.

The case is currently under federal review for charges as the investigation uncovered an additional 7 pounds of methamphetamine, one pound of cocaine and multiple firearms at the home where Caleb and Timothy were known to reside. This search was carried out four months before their arrest.

Both Graham and Barfield could face a number of charges, including possession with intent to distribute, failure to stop when commanded by law enforcement and careless driving.
