Stockport’s Dave Challinor: No one will remember this game if we get a good draw

Stockport boss Dave Challinor was relieved as his side reached the second round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory after extra time over non-league Forest Green.

A mistake from County’s defense allowed Christian Doidge to cancel out Fraser Horsfall’s opener to force extra time in the first round.

But Kyle Wootton’s 97th-minute strike earned Stockport a place in the next round.

County boss Challinor said: “I don’t think today was a good watch. We were a little better in the second half and should have won the game, but we made a terrible mistake and had to play an extra half hour.

“We were taken right to the wire, but the main thing is that we passed.

“No one will remember what happened today if we get a good draw in the second round and we as a club are looking to get a big draw in the third round.”

Visiting coach Steve Cotterill said he had never been prouder of his Forest Green side after they swept their League One rivals completely.

Stockport recorded a convincing victory over Forest Green in League Two last season, but with the clubs now split into two divisions, Cotterill believes his side have made huge strides since relegation to the National League.

“We were amazing today, I couldn’t be prouder,” Cotterill said.

“In the end we lost a game we didn’t deserve. I thought we were excellent in everything we did today and I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of the team here in my time here than I was today.

“I think today proved how far we have come. Last season we played Stockport and lost 3-0 at home, but today we came here six months later and played the same way.”
