The search committee is seeking names for the next IR by November 7

The Candidate Selection Committee, tasked with forming the new election commission, has called for nominations by November 7.

In accordance with the decision taken at the first meeting, political parties, professional organizations and individuals are invited to propose names for consideration.

A maximum of five names can be submitted for each position. The committee issued a notice regarding this request on Sunday evening (November 3).

Earlier in the day, the search committee met for its first meeting at the Supreme Court. According to the press release, the committee, established under the “Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act of 2022,” is responsible for recommending qualified individuals to the President for the positions of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.

Political parties and professional organizations are allowed to nominate up to five candidates for these positions, with nominations due by 5:00 pm on November 7. Interested parties can also submit their own names.

The circular directs that all proposals, accompanied by a full summary, be sent directly to the Cabinet Office or sent via email (email protected).

On October 31, the government formed a search committee to recommend candidates for the new commission, which includes the appointment of the chief election commissioner and other commission members.

Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division is the convener of the six-member committee. Other members include High Court Judge AKM Asaduzzaman, as well as two citizens appointed by the President: former Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) Professor Zinnatun Nesha Tahmida Begum and former Dhaka University International Relations Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar. In addition, the ex officio members include Auditor General and Comptroller of Bangladesh Nurul Islam and PSC Chairman Mobasser Monem.

The Selection Committee will perform its duties in accordance with the above-mentioned Appointments Law, and the Cabinet Office will provide the necessary secretarial support. The Committee will recommend two candidates for each vacant position to the President for appointment.
