Trump takes calls from a growing list of world leaders after winning election

LONDON — Chinese President Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were among the world leaders who spoke by phone with President-elect Donald Trump in the 24 hours after he defeated Vice President Kamala Harris.

Congratulations poured in from around the world as it became clear Trump had established an unassailable lead over Harris, and as the former president passed the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes needed to secure another term in the White House.

Leaders, some of whom had criticized Trump’s foreign policy during his first term, appeared to take a conciliatory stance as they congratulated the man who would become America’s 47th president.

China’s official state news agency Xinhua said Xi called Trump on Thursday. Xi Jinping, Xinhua wrote, “noted that history shows us that cooperation between China and the United States will benefit both sides, but fighting will harm both sides.”

“Stable, healthy and resilient China-US relations are in line with the common interests of the two countries and the expectations of the international community,” he added, according to Xinhua.

Macron spoke with Trump on Wednesday, the French presidential office said in a statement.

Both men expressed a “willingness to work to restore peace and stability” in the face of a “major international crisis,” Macron’s office said, describing the conversation as “a very good 25-minute exchange of views.”

Macron “stressed the importance of Europe’s role and told President Trump that he is ready to continue this conversation and work together on these issues,” including Ukraine and the Middle East, “when he takes office” at the end of January 2025, his office said. added.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer tweeted X after his phone call with Trump, saying it was “a pleasure to speak” with the next American president. “From defense and security to growth and prosperity, the relationship between the UK and US is incredibly strong and will continue to thrive for many years to come,” he wrote.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with Trump as the former seeks to cement long-term American military and financial support for Kyiv in its ongoing defensive war with Russia.

Zelensky said on social media that the call was “excellent,” adding that Trump’s “historic landslide victory” was made possible by a “colossal campaign.”

“I praised his family and team for their excellent work,” Zelensky said. “We agreed to maintain a close dialogue and develop our cooperation. Strong and steadfast U.S. leadership is vital to peace and a just world.”

Netanyahu will also count on continued military support from the next administration as Israel wages a multi-front war against Iranian-backed militant groups in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and beyond.

“The Prime Minister was one of the first to call the American president-elect,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement Wednesday, calling the conversation “warm and cordial.”

“The Prime Minister congratulated Trump on his election victory and they agreed to work together for Israel’s security,” the office said. “They also discussed the Iranian threat.”

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol spoke with Trump for about 12 minutes, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

They discussed “the cooperation of South Korea, the United States and Japan, the alliance of South Korea and the United States” and North Korea’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, Yonhap reported.

“They agreed to hold a meeting soon and at a certain place,” said Kim Tae-hyo, first deputy director of the National Security Bureau, according to Yonhap.
