Harris addresses Gaza protesters in Michigan • Near-record heat • SOS confirms ballot box security

During a rally in Ann Arbor with Tim Walz on Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed protesters against violence in the Gaza Strip.

“Hey guys, I hear you,” she said. “As for the Gaza Strip, we all want this war to end as soon as possible and for the hostages to be released. And I will do everything in my power to make this happen.”

Some have criticized President Joe Biden’s response to ongoing violence in the Middle East, arguing his administration has not done enough.

Last week, Osama Siblani, publisher of Arab American News, said his publication would not endorse a candidate on the issue. He said there remains frustration that the campaigns of both Harris and former President Donald Trump are not adequately addressing the growing crisis in the Middle East – after a year of Israel’s war in Gaza.

“Obviously we’re not happy with Trump, but what Biden and Harris have done over the last 12 months is a terrible situation,” Siblani said.

Other Arab Americans share this sentiment.

“The campaign did not engage the Arabs and the Muslim community in finding a meaningful solution to even figure out how they formulated their statement,” Ahmed Ghanim said. “Even the way they express their approach, the way they approach the idea – Muslims are not included at all.”

There could be record heat this week

This week, metro Detroit could reach temperatures not seen in late October since 1999.

The forecast high for Tuesday is 77°, matching the daily record set back in 1999. Tomorrow is approaching the record and we expect to reach 78°, which will break the record of 76°, also set in 1999.

With heat comes strong winds. Gusts can reach 25-30 meters per second.

After a sharp increase in temperature they will decrease slightly. Halloween is forecast to be around 70 hours a day with a chance of light rain during the afternoon.

By the weekend, temperatures drop even further and the weather returns to resemble fall.

Detroit police officer faces second domestic violence charge

A Detroit police officer now faces charges after he allegedly threatened to execute a woman last week.

Louis Allen Wilson, 47, returned to his home Oct. 22 and told the woman he would kill her, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. The victim, whose relationship to Wilson was not disclosed, ran to a neighbor’s house and called for help.

Wilson now faces a charge of secondary domestic violence. He was given a $1,500 personal recognizance bond.

“It is my responsibility to ensure that justice prevails, regardless of a person’s profession or position. Being charged with domestic violence, especially as a repeat offender, is a serious matter and no one is above the law. We are committed to a fair and thorough process to protect the rights of the victim and maintain the integrity of our legal system,” said Attorney Pete Lucido.

Lucido recently spoke about the sharp rise in domestic violence cases in his county. According to the prosecutor, in the first seven months of 2024, 2,105 cases of domestic violence were reported.

Police chase ends with pregnant woman escorted to hospital

When Mary Weertz’s water broke earlier this month, the goal was to get to the hospital quickly, but an illegal turn caught the attention of a Utica police officer.

Ostn Sadowski put Wirtz in his truck and rushed to the hospital on October 17. However, at some point he made an illegal left turn in front of Officer Liz Demuink.

“So he did it basically right in front of me, so I turned around because he was going pretty fast,” she said.

Sadovsky continued walking.

“I called 911 and said, ‘My name is Austin Sadowski. I’m driving a black Super Duty and now the cops are chasing me and I’m not stopping,” he said.

He eventually stopped and spoke to Demuink, who escorted the couple to the hospital.

A few days later, Weertz and Sadowski thanked Demuink in person, and she met baby Henry.

“When that’s the case and there’s a positive result, you feel good, like you helped,” she said.

SOS confirms safety of ballot boxes after fires

After ballot boxes were recently set on fire in Oregon and Washington, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is trying to allay concerns about ballots being returned to the boxes.

Authorities said an incendiary device was placed inside a ballot box in Oregon before igniting the fire, and a device on the outside of a ballot box in Washington was used to set it on fire.

“They (ballot boxes) are designed in such a way that it is very difficult to put anything in them other than a ballot,” Benson said when asked about the security of Michigan ballot boxes.

She said the boxes are checked daily. State law requires that, beginning 35 days before Election Day, ballot drop boxes must be emptied every day the city or town clerk’s office is open.

“They are checked daily. They are monitored by video cameras,” she said. “Junk boxes are safe in Michigan.”

Benson noted that some people may tamper with boxes somewhere in the US “to create history.”

“Certainly fear makes people afraid to use recycling bins,” she said. “We don’t want to increase unnecessary fears. Litter boxes are safe in Michigan.”

Costco Issues Recall Notices for Frozen Waffles, Freeze-Dried Meats Due to Listeria Concerns

Frozen waffles and freeze-dried meats sold at Costco are subject to recall, making them the latest products to come under the spotlight in the fight against listeria.

On Tuesday, TreeHouse Foods announced a voluntary recall of “all products manufactured at the same facility that are within their expiration dates.” The recalled product, Krusteaz Belgian Waffles 24ct, was sold at Costco between October 13, 2023 and October 21, 2024.

That same day, the food supplier also issued a broader recall notice for products “sold through most retail stores,” listing at least nine other retailers.

The recalled products “were distributed in all states and provinces of the United States and Canada and were packaged in a variety of formats,” TreeHouse Foods said, noting that consumers and retailers can identify the affected products by the UPC on the back of the box. code and expiration date.

Consumers who find recalled products in their freezers should dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for credit. At this time, TreeHouse Foods says there have been “no confirmed reports of illnesses associated with the recalled products.”
